Transylvania Vampire Tour – Biertan
Biertan is an old Saxon settlement. Its inhabitants founded it between 1224 and 1283 – the exact date is unknown. By the 1500’s, as many as 5000 people were living in Biertan. The fortified Church which people can admire today was built in the 15th and 16th century. Later on, due to the increase of popularity of Sighisoara Citadel, the Saxon City of Sibiu or Medias, Biertan’s importance lowered.
Since the 1990’s, Biertan, as well as the Fortified Church within the citadel, are UNESCO World Heritage sites. The Church is unique because of the fortifications surrounding it. They were the Saxons’ response to the looming Ottoman threat in Medieval times. There are three rows of exterior fortifications complemented by nine gate towers.
The 1977 earthquake caused serious damage to the Church , but Communists restored it between 1983 and 1989. After 1990, a lot of Saxons left Biertan – and Romania as well. As a result, today, among Biertan’s population of approximately 2000 people, less than 100 are Saxons.
